Post-focus Compression: Cross-linguistic Distribution and Historical Origin
نویسنده
چکیده
One of the most important acoustic correlates of prosodic focus is post-focus compression (PFC) — the reduction of pitch range and amplitude of all post-focus components in an utterance. PFC has been found in many Indo-European, Altaic languages, and interestingly, also in Mandarin Chinese. Meanwhile, there have also been reports that many other languages do not have PFC, or lack any clear prosodic marking of focus. This paper presents a brief review of the current state of the art in the investigation of PFC, and discusses a number of hypotheses in regard to this typological division among the world languages. In particular, the idea is explored that the distribution of PFC is related to the historical development of the world languages.

Pragmatic expressions in cross-linguistic perspective
This paper focuses on some pragmatic expressions that are characteristic of informal spoken English, their possible equivalents in some other languages, and their use by EFL learners from different backgrounds. These expressions, called general extenders (e.g. and stuff, or something), are shown to be different from discourse markers and to exhibit variation in form, funct...
متن کاملPhonetic realization of second occurrence focus in Japanese
Previous studies have recently agreed that second occurrence focus is phonetically realized as prosodic prominence. What has been missing in the previous studies, however, is a comparison with neutral-focus, in addition to main focus and pre/postfocus, which is necessary to elucidate a precise phonetic status of second occurrence focus. Using evidence from Japanese, this study shows that second...
متن کاملScheduling Post-Distribution Cross-Dock under Demand Uncertainty
The system of distribution of goods and services, along with other economic developments around the world, is rapidly evolving. In the world of distribution of goods, the main focus is on making distribution operations more effective. Due to the fact that the cross-dock has the advantage of removing intermediaries and reducing the space required for the warehouse, it is worth considering. Among...
متن کاملProsodic Focus with Post-focus Compression in Lan-Yin Mandarin
Post-focus compression (PFC), the lowering of pitch range and intensity of the post prosodic focus components, is a phenomenon that has been found in various languages worldwide. The interesting findings of the presence and absence of PFC in two closely-related Mandarin Chinese languages, Beijing Mandarin and Taiwan Mandarin respectively, have brought several discussions on the historical origi...
متن کاملProsodic Realization of Focus in Six Languages/Dialects in China
In this paper, the prosodic realization of focus in six languages/dialects in China were experimentally investigated, which were Yi and Tibetan (TibetanBurma), Wa and Deang (Mon-Khmer), Uygur (Turkic) and Nanchang dialect (Gan), all spoken in China. Tibetan, Uygur and Nanchang showed onfocus F0 raising and post-focus F0 compression (PFC) whereas no clear F0 variation due to focus was found in W...
